Puget Sound Self Storage Facilities Reach the Finish Line

Two new JMA-designed self storage facilities were recently completed in the Puget Sound- West Coast Self Storage (Fircrest) in the Fircrest neighborhood of Tacoma, and Sherlock Storage in rural King County.

West Coast Self Storage (Fircrest), located in Tacoma, Washington, is a Type 2B building with 87,933 SF and three stories. It was built in an underutilized parking area serving Home Depot which contained 13 feet of soil grade change.

To better serve future customers, the project was designed to have loading access on both the first and second floor. The building is designed in the client’s signature colors and utilizes large storefront display areas at the key corners.

“The natural topography made the decision to go with an over/under design scheme an easy one,” said Architect Casey Kispert who worked on the Fircrest project. “Our team enjoyed working with the Tacoma City Council to develop the site as self-storage which required a variance approval for the proposed design.”

Sherlock Self Storage, located in Duvall, is an 89,407 SF facility which includes four levels and 592 units. It was designed with a massing model meant to emulate the design of a nearby historic barn. JMA, while designing the facility, had to consider environmental issues due to proximity to the nearby Snoqualmie River.

“Our work on Sherlock Storage proves our team at JMA can design attractive and functional facilities even with unique environmental challenges,” said Principal Robin Murphy. “We look forward to continuing our innovation in the self storage industry.”
