Self Storage Construction Update

West Coast Self Storage – Lacey, Washington

West Coast Self Storage recently demolished a 5,000 SF wood-frame building in Lacey, Washington to construct a JMA-designed self storage facility made up of 2 separate buildings (A and B).

“The design had to fit the needs of a modern self storage facility into a small urban site,” said JMA Senior Project Manager Larz Hitchcock. “The City of Lacey also required a path to a trail behind the site which further reduced the area for construction. They also had requirements for a smaller building profile on the street.”

Building A will be a 2,025 SF single-story office/ retail space with a second rentable retail space.  Building B will be a 3-story 70,350 SF structure dedicated to self-storage only.

“By designing the retail portion of the project as a separate building and having the storage to the rear of the site, we were able to comply with the city’s desires to make the massing appear smaller than normal from the street and provide access down the site’s side to the public trail behind the buildings,” said Hitchcock.

The contractor is providing weekly construction photos to the JMA team.

Extra Space Storage – Simi Valley, California

JMA recently designed a new Extra Space Storage property in Simi Valley, California. Currently under construction, the property will hold 4 buildings totaling 152,000 SF.

“It’s exciting to see our designs come to life, especially against the beautiful surrounding landscape in Simi Valley,” said JMA Associate Dan Rasmusson.  “This is a massive facility and I think it will be extremely valuable to the community.”

One building will be a 34,000 SF storage facility with over 1,000 storage units, and the other three will be warehouses. The site will include 159 parking spaces and nine bike parking spaces.

Construction will likely be completed in the second quarter of 2022.
