JMA Ahead of the Curve in Healthcare Design

In 2018 Jackson | Main Architecture (JMA) participated in Healthcare Design’s “Breaking Through” Conceptual Design Competition and created Community Care Cubed which uses modular cubes to allow a healthcare facility to work in symbiotic relationship with the surrounding community.

“This kind of modular design is the future of healthcare, and it’s even more apparent during this pandemic where hospitals must completely transform,” said Principal Tim Black.  “Our team was ahead of the curve in understanding that healthcare facilities must be flexible and respond to the unique challenges within the community, and it shows in our submission for the competition.”

The module designed for the competition centers on a “kit-of-parts” approach, allowing rapid fulfillment of needs within a uniform standard of care. Parts are assembled as needed to create functional areas meeting short- and long-term needs of the community, whether health maintenance or treatment. Interior systems allow spaces to change functions both within the day and over the lifetime of the facility. Demounted elements can be refurbished and re-enter the value stream, installed in new locations.
