JMA Gives Vintage Swimming Pool a Modern Touch
The Arbor Heights Swim & Tennis Club reopened in June after JMA collaborated with STS Construction Services for an extensive remodel of the club’s pool area involving a new raised sun deck, expanded cabana and bath house, and upgraded accessible interiors.

“Our team thoroughly enjoyed designing these improved club buildings which were largely unmodified since their construction in the early 1960s,” said JMA Principal Robin Murphy. “It’s also great to see this remodeled facility open for summer under social distancing guidelines.”
JMA designed a 1,250 SF raised deck addition on the south side of the pool deck, and a 635 SF addition to an existing cabana building. The existing single-story bath house building had an extensive upgrade of the facility’s interior spaces.
“From schematic design to construction administration, we were involved in every stage of this remodel, and our goal was to work with the AH board to understand their long and short-term goals for this facility.” said Murphy. “We also worked with the city of Seattle to help navigate the long permitting process, and updating the facility’s accessibility was another goal.”
Ultimately JMA provided a more modern Cabana that opens up to the pool area and provides a stronger connection between the inside and outside parts of the facility.
Construction on the sun deck began February 2019. The first phase was completed in time for the 2019 season. The second phase included the work on both buildings and was completed this spring.
