NE Portland Apartments Earn Finalist Spot in DJC Oregon's Top Projects Competition
The JMA-designed Ascend apartment building in Northeast Portland was recently named a finalist in DJC Oregon’s TopProjects awards competition, specifically in the Multi-Family category.
“It was a pleasure working with Seabold Construction, and we are so glad they chose to submit Ascend for this recognition,” said JMA Principal Robin Murphy who designed the 5-story apartment building. “Vibrant Cities, the developer, continues to do an amazing job bringing much needed housing options to the Pacific Northwest.”
Ascend offers 92 residential units, 4 shared kitchens, as well as 4 live/work units. Residents enjoy a multitude of amenities including a courtyard, mid-level decks, a gym, and 2 electric vehicle charging stations as well as bicycle storage/parking.

As a congregate housing development, the building offers studio, 1 to 2 bedroom, and loft layouts, as well as various shared essential amenities to give residents a high-end experience at an affordable price. Five small commercial spaces also sit on the first floor.
“I really enjoyed working on Ascend,” said JMA designer Dirk McCulloch. “The building elevates Northeast Portland and offers an affordable and sustainable type of modern, urban living.”
As a finalist, Ascend is being considered for Project of the Year in addition to Multi-Family Project of the Year. The winners will be announced on September 9th at DJC Oregon’s first live event since the pandemic.
