HERE Seattle (University District Safeway) | Seattle, WA
Jackson | Main Architecture, P.S. (JMA) provided architectural design services for a mixed-use project located in Seattle’s University District. The development is strategically positioned within walking distance of the University of Washington campus, University Way, the neighborhood farmers market, and the Sound Transit Link Light Rail, reinforcing a highly walkable, transit-oriented urban environment.
The design emphasizes community integration through a network of open spaces that support year-round use. The project includes approximately 6,627 square feet of covered and uncovered community park space, which connects to an adjacent park associated with the neighboring tower, creating a combined outdoor gathering area of approximately 10,000 square feet for social and community events. Ground floor retail activates the streetscape and includes a modern Safeway grocery store serving both residents and the surrounding neighborhood. Upper levels accommodate student-oriented housing with a range of unit types from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom units, supporting diverse living needs. Safety and visibility were key design considerations, with well-lit circulation areas and clear sightlines contributing to a secure environment for residents and shoppers.
